How to Determine that your Child has Autism:
Please click here for the Autism Society of BC's General Information Brochure for more information on What is Autism.
Parents who suspect heir child suffers from Autism may want to start by looking at the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (also known as CHAT) or the M-CHAT (modified checklist for autism in toddlers). This is a very helpful diagnostic tool used by both parents and physicians to determine whether or not the child may be autistic. Please note that there is also a section on this Checklist designed specifically for the child's family doctor to complete. Once the Checklist for Autism in Toddlers has been completed, and Autism is suspected, the child will then be required to complete a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment.
How to Get a Diagnosis:
A qualified professional with experience in Diagnosing Autism is critical to obtain an accurate assessment for you child. To obtain an Assessment, you must first have a referral from your paediatrician or family doctor. They will refer you to BCAAN (BC Autism Assessment Network). The network consists of diagnostic teams located throughout BC. For more information regarding BCANN, please click here.
Alternatively, for a fee of between $1200 - $1500 you can hire a Private Professional to do the Assessement. You might also wish to contact your local Community Discussion Group to talk with people who are aware of the resources in your community.
